Moorside Primary School is a smaller than average-sized primary school located in Consett, Co. Durham. The proportion of pupils supported by the pupil premium is well above the national average as is the percentage of children with SEND. I took over as Headteacher in September 2012 and numbers had been decreasing steadily; pupil progress and attainment were also below national measures. There was a very static staffing structure and most staff had been at the school for a significant period of time. There was a culture of low expectations and apathy that permeated the building accompanied by repeating ‘satisfactory’ Ofsted judgements.
