Burnside Primary School is a small community school located in a local authority housing estate in Houghton le Spring, Sunderland. The proportion of disadvantaged pupils and pupils identified with special educational needs is above average. Pupil mobility is high.

An Ofsted inspection in 2009 placed the school in a notice to improve category. Prior to NTI staff were working hard but with no clear direction there was little or no impact on the overall effectiveness of the school. A lack of staff CPD and clarity of expectations resulted in a collection of inaccurate assessment information. School was below floor targets in the end of key stage 2 tests in 2009.
