Boldon School

Boldon School is a secondary provision situated within the Borough of South Tyneside, serving some of the most deprived wards within the country. Over recent years, the school has faced significant challenges; falling roles, financial challenges, staff shortages, poor Progress 8 and Attainment 8 performance. Boldon’s results were regularly below national and regional expectations and the school had been recognised by Ofsted as ‘satisfactory’ for a decade.

Leadership acknowledged a need for restructure of both pastoral and academic responsibilities. Assistant Head roles were created for mathematics, English and science which improved the quality of leadership. A stronger system of accountability for staff at all levels, together with a targeted teaching and learning programme was implemented whole school. Our pastoral team employed the skills of non-teaching staff to work with year leaders, in order to make management of students more effective for teachers. In turn this promoted more effective behaviour management, personal development and safeguarding. This had an excellent impact on developing meaningful home school relationships. All of this contributed to significant improvements to student’s outcomes within our first year.
