St Alphonsus is average sized primary school with 225 pupils on roll. 72.7% of children are from minority ethnic groups, with 28.6% whose first language is not English. The catchment area of Old Trafford is in the highest deprivation indicator and 56.6% of children are eligible for free school meals. The school has close links with the Catholic Church of St Alphonsus.

The Ofsted Inspection of 2006 gave us a judgement of good but noted improvements could be made in the areas of communication, literacy and language skills, development of curriculum leaders and governance. The school worked hard to develop these areas, including initiatives such as ‘BLAST’, ‘Every Child a Reader’, ‘Every Child a Talker’. Curriculum leaders became proactive in developing their subject areas and new governors were appointed.
